Serendipity (“Balou”) is a 17.3hh 2018 Brandenburg gelding imported in 2023. Developed with a strong foundation in the hunters, including national derbies and some equitation, Balou has since made the transition into the jumper ring, gaining experience through 1.35m and quickly proving that this is where he shines.
Balou is an extremely honest and forgiving horse who always wants to do the right thing. He consistently helps his rider to the jumps, takes all the jokes, and is very forgiving of mistakes. He is straightforward and comfortable to ride, with a soft mouth and a smooth adjustable canter, established lateral work, and reliable, easy lead changes. He is light and responsive to the aids, has plenty of step down the lines, he carries a nice rhythm, and gives his rider plenty of options to the jumps. He is brave and genuine to the fences, and has a powerful jump with plenty of scope as the fences get bigger.
On the ground, Balou is incredibly sweet and gentle and thrives on praise and attention. He loves to be doted on, takes treats softly, ties and cross-ties well, enjoys grooming, and is a pleasure to have in the barn. He is good for the vet and farrier, gets along well with other horses, and has always been sound and happy in his work.
While generally quiet and easygoing, Balou can get sensitive and have a spook or become more reactive to the atmosphere, particularly in a busy warm up environment. He does best with a confident rider that can be patient and can give him reassurance. He thrives in a consistent program with a person he can trust and has really enjoyed developing in the jumper ring. He is being offered for sale or lease as his owner heads off to college.
